Just letting all our readers and fans know that we have just set up our blog on wordpress...
We've done this to get round the restriction on blogger imposed by some schools and LA establishments, as wordpress does not appear to be filtered....yet.
We will continue to maintain our blogger sites as well, but check out the 'press' on..

Happy new year!
The blog and podcast group is back and better than ever..or so we say

So lets get started! Our newest debate for all you bloggers out there is on Child Labour!
No matter where you are in the world child labour exists and we can't ignore it. We tend to shun it out but it's all around us. Places like Primark, Ann summers and GAP many other clothing retailers employ children in countries such as China and Africa to manufacture our clothes. The reason it is ignored is because of our greed for cheap clothing.
So now it's your turn! Tell us then!
What do you think about this? in your opinion is this wrong or right?
How can we solve it? Should we even care?

The blog's been a little quiet of late. This has been due in no small part to the disgraceful restrictions on free-speech which have led to sites such as blogger.com being blocked in schools across South Lanarkshire. Not only is this short-sighted and frankly stupid, but flies in the face of everything a 'curriculum for excellence' is supposed to stand for. Our blog has stimulated sometimes heated debate, brought the school into the wider community through our interactions with the world of politics and our highlighting of environmental issues, and introduced web 2.0 to a whole new generation through our work with primary pupils and our sister blog 7ups2cathkin.

At last sense may have prevailed and we will once again have access to our blogs in school and will be able to continue with our efforts both curricular and social. And not a moment too soon. Our school is a pilot school for the Scottish Schools digital network (GLOW). Lets hope the short-sightedness of the powers that be which have for many weeks blocked access to this blog does not manage to apply its cack-handed approach to this important ICT development.

Watch out for a fresh look and more controversial topics which are coming soon to the Cathkin High site.

Ever wondered what your teachers call "music" Well we soon hope to bring Cathkin island discs. Asking teachers if they were stranded on a desert island which tracks would they take ?
Our beloved biology teacher Mr Jones and his taste in music we'll be putting him the hotseat and finding out the secrets behind his favourite songs.

Oh and if that's not enough there's also disscussions about a all day pod-a-thon like last years blog-a-thon but we're taking it up a level and want to get everyone of you involved!!

BLOGGER SENT TO PRISON FOR INSULTING ISLAM AND THE EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT...

An Egyptian student, Abdul Kareem Nabil has been sent to prison for commenting on his blogsite. He received a sentence of 4 years.

This is worrying for all users of blogsites such as this one as it threatens the principle of free speech and instant communication made possible by the new media.

The Egyptian government has an appalling record on human rights, regularly jailing political opponents and others for reasons such as their sexuality. Torture and violence are regularly used by the authorities. Abdul was heard to scream following a loud slapping noise from the police van taking him away to prison.

The Egyptian government sends its teachers to Scotland for training. Some of them are in School now. It would be interesting to hear what they think of their government. Do you think that Strathclyde University and Cathkin High school should continue to accept money from such a government ?

Post your comments and register your support for Abdul Nabil, a fellow student and Blogger here, or mail your messages to bloggroup@cathkin.s-lanark.sch.uk and we will post them for you....

Let the Government of Egypt know your feelings.....e-mail your protests to them on..

Cathkin High School is about to get greener ! The school is getting ready to join the ECO SCHOOLS programme...

What kind of things do you think we should be looking at in school ? Does the amount of paper we waste concern you ? what about all the litter, and the drinks cans that are kicking about ? should we, no YOU be doing more to make our school environment a better place, and should we be doing more to stop the wasteful use of the EARTH's resources ?

Post your comments or contact us to get involved in the ECO-SCHOOL committee...

Save it-recycle it- or lose it....

You know it makes sense..

Class 1B3 at Cathkin High School have entered a competition where the class have agreed to remain "smoke free" for 5 months during this school year and they could win a prize. Here are some of their views about smoking:
"If they get rid of 10 packs of cigarettes then smokers will just smoke more. The smoking ban was a good idea because it's better for non smokers health."
" Put out more smoking bans in Scotland and raise prices for tobacco, cigarettes and cigars plus raise the age limit to buy cigarettes."
"Don't smoke it takes 5 minutes off your life every time you smoke."
" For smoking I think the legal age of smoking should be raised as well as the price."
" I think we should blog about cigarettes. I think the age should go up."
"Smoking should be banned altogether or the age should be raised at which you can buy them."
"The smoking age limit should be 21 years and over and the price of cigarettes should go up."
"Don't smoke, it harms your lungs and kills you quicker."
